(AP) ? The dismembered bodies of 17 men were found Sunday on a farm in central Mexico, in an area disputed by violent drug cartels, officials said.

The bodies were dumped in the town of Tizapan el Alto by the border between Jalisco and Michoacan, said Jalisco state prosecutor Tomas Coronado Olmos. The bodies were discovered as Mexicans celebrated their Independence Day.

Coronado Olmos didn't reveal the identities of the slain men but said the bodies were naked, mutilated and stacked with chains around their necks near the highway linking Guadalajara and Morelia. They had been killed elsewhere and dumped on the property.

"Our border regions with other states are vulnerable to this kind of action and the dumping of bodies," the prosecutor said.

Authorities haven't said who they think was behind the killings but the area is a cartel battleground and Mexico's crime groups regularly leave behind such grisly remains as they battle for control of trafficking routes and markets..

Michoacan state is home to the Familia Michoacana and the Caballeros Templarios organized crime groups, and Jalisco has seen violence by the brutal Zetas and the Jalisco Nueva Generacion cartels.

Signs were put up last week in various Jalisco municipalities in which the Caballeros Templarios threatened the Zetas and Jalisco Nueva Generacion.

A shootout between local police and an armed convoy last Monday left two people dead and two injured in the same municipality near the border between Jalisco and Michoacan.

In May, authorities found 18 human heads and remains packed into two abandoned cars along the highway connecting Chalapa and Guadalajara, Jalisco.

On Friday in Tamaulipas, 16 bodies were found across the state just two days after the arrest there of one of the region's top drug bosses, Gulf Cartel head Eduardo Costilla Sanchez. Nine of the bodies were found in Nuevo Laredo along the Texas border and seven were found in near the town of San Fernando, where 74 dead migrants were found in August, 2010.

More than 47,500 people have been killed in Mexican drug violence since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon launched a military offensive against the cartels, according to the latest official figures. Some civil groups and activists say the figure is higher.

With lockout looming, NHL and union get back in touch but no new negotiations are set

NEW YORK - The NHL seemed headed for another lockout Friday as neither team owners nor players showed interest in getting back to contract negotiations a day before the old labor deal was set to expire.

Brief conversations late Thursday and Friday between leaders on the two sides failed to spur more formal talks ? in fact, the idea of restarting negotiations didn't even come up. The current collective bargaining agreement that ended the season-long lockout in 2005 expires at midnight EDT on Saturday, and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has said a lockout would kick in immediately if a new deal hasn't been reached.

"It's their decision," defenseman Mike Weaver, the Florida Panthers' player representative said Friday. "When that padlock comes out, it's pretty much Bettman's decision on there."

The lockout would mark the NHL's fourth work stoppage since 1992.

On Thursday night, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly spoke to players' association special counsel Steve Fehr, the brother of union executive director Donald Fehr. The discussions mostly dealt with answering questions each side have about current proposals.

Bettman has said the season won't start without a new deal. Preseason games are scheduled to start on Sept. 23, and the regular season is to begin on Oct. 11.

"We have been clear that the collective bargaining agreement, upon its expiration, needs to have a successful agreement for us to move forward," Bettman said Thursday. "The league is not in a position, not willing to move forward with another season under the status quo."

On Friday, the Quebec labor relations board turned down a request from the players' association for a temporary injunction against a potential lockout in Quebec.

But the board also ruled Friday that more hearings are needed to make a final decision on a request by 16 members of the Montreal Canadiens and the players' association to declare a lockout illegal in the province.

No date was set for further hearings.

With the ruling, Canadiens players will be locked out with their colleagues if a work stoppage goes ahead on schedule.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly was happy with the decision.

"We are pleased but not surprised with the Quebec labor board's ruling tonight that any lockout of players will be effective on a league-wide basis, including in Quebec, and we are extremely appreciative of the expeditious and decisive manner in which the matter was handled," he said in a statement. "We are hopeful that this ruling will cause the players' association to cease pursuing these needless distractions and instead focus all of its efforts and energies on making progress at the bargaining table."

The union also saw the decision as a positive development.

"We are pleased with the ruling that the commission released tonight." NHL players' association general counsel Don Zavelo said in a statement. "While the commission denied the players' request for emergency relief, it also rejected the NHL's request to dismiss the case. The ruling acknowledges that the players have raised issues about the legality of the NHL's planned lockout that require a full hearing on the merits."

"We remain confident that the lockout is prohibited by the Quebec labor code and look forward to presenting our case to the commission in the near future. Should the NHL carry out its threat to lock out the players in Quebec, it will do so at its own risk."

A similar request was filed late Thursday with the Alberta labor relations board. NHLPA director of operations Alexandra Dagg said the aim was to prevent players from the Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames from being locked out.

The NHLPA argued that because it isn't certified as a union with the province, its members can't locked out under Quebec labor law. In Alberta, the union will argue that proper procedure wasn't followed, including using a mediator.

On Thursday, players turned out in force in midtown Manhattan, while the league's board of governors met nearby in another hotel.

The last labor stoppage caused the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 season, a lockout that ended only when players accepted a salary cap and a 24 percent rollback of salaries.

"If we're not going to start camp on time, it's disappointing, for sure," Panthers forward Stephen Weiss said Friday. "We're all training all summer to be ready to play, and if we don't get that opportunity, it's disappointing. But I'm optimistic that we'll get a deal done sooner than later.

"There's smart enough people involved in this thing that I don't think it'll take too long. We just have to make sure whatever deal they do agree on, it makes sense for both sides and it will be lasting."

Following lockouts last year by basketball and football owners, Bettman says hockey management is determined to come away with economic gains, even if it forces another work stoppage.

"Two other leagues ? the NBA and the NFL ? their players have recognized that in these economic times there is a need to retrench," Bettman said after a two-hour owners' meeting Thursday.

Damage from another lockout will occur almost immediately, and there is no telling how jilted fans and sponsors will react to another shutdown, especially if it lasts stretches through the fall and into the winter.

Management's latest offer has a short shelf life. Once the lockout begins, Bettman says the economic damage would cause owners to offer players a less beneficial deal.

Players currently receive 57 percent of hockey-related revenue, and the owners want to bring that number down as far as perhaps 47 percent ? which is an increase from their original offer of 43 percent.

"The fact is, we believe that 57 percent of HRR is too much," Bettman said.

The union offered a deal based on actual dollars, seeking a guarantee of the $1.8 billion players received last season. Annual industry revenue has grown from $2.1 billion to $3.3 billion under the expiring deal.

Players are concerned management hasn't addressed the league's financial problems by re-examining the teams' revenue-sharing formula. Having made several big concessions to reach a deal in 2005, the union doesn't think it should have to make more this time after record financial growth.

The current contract was agreed to in 2005, and Bob Goodenow resigned as union head two weeks later. After stints by Ted Saskin and Paul Kelly, the union in 2010 turned to Fehr, who led baseball players through three work stoppages in the 1980s and `90s.

Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller said Fehr is doing a far better job communicating with members than leadership did in the last lockout. The 30 league owners are prohibited by NHL bylaws from publicly commenting about negotiations.

"I doubt that all the owners are as well informed as all the players," Miller said. "I don't know if that's going to get me in trouble or not. I just feel like it's kind of whatever they are told by Gary. I guess it's a little bit like politics. ... You have this whole thing where I'm sure they feel like a lot of what we're saying is spin."

Players struck in April 1992, causing 30 games to be postponed.

This would be the third lockout under Bettman. The 1994-95 lockout ended after 103 days and the cancellation of 468 games. The most recent lockout was finally settled in July 2005 ? 301 days into the work stoppage and a month after the league would usually have awarded the Stanley Cup.

"The players very much want to reach an agreement, provided that it is one which is fair and which is equitable and treats them appropriately," Donald Fehr said.

(AP) ? Four Americans killed in an attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya returned home Friday, their remains each carried in a slow procession by six Marines as a military band filled a vast air base hangar with the mournful hymn "Nearer My God to Thee."

President Barack Obama led the ceremony, recalling their lives in deeply personal terms and declaring the United States will never pull back on its principles or "retreat from the world."

"Their sacrifice will never be forgotten," Obama said as four flag-draped cases rested near him. He had come to witness the return of those slain in the assault on the American diplomatic mission, including the U.S. ambassador, Chris Stevens.

In the heat of a presidential election year, the scene was a gripping reminder of the danger facing Americans in diplomatic and military service every day, and of the turmoil in an incendiary region of the world that continues to test Obama's leadership.

Always in the background, campaign politics gave way to a sense of sheer loss. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's voice broke as she spoke before the president, and she appeared to be fighting tears as she listened to him.

In addition to Stevens, the ceremony also honored three other Americans killed in Benghazi ? Sean Smith, an Air Force veteran who worked as an information management specialist for the State Department; Glen A. Doherty, a former Navy SEAL who worked for a private security firm and was protecting the consulate in Benghazi; and Tyrone S. Woods, also a former Navy SEAL who had served protective duty in various U.S. posts.

"They knew the danger, and they accepted it," Obama said. "They didn't simply embrace the American ideal. They lived it."

The ceremony recalled one 14 years ago, when President Bill Clinton led a ceremony at Andrews for the return of remains of 10 Americans killed in a bombing in Nairobi.

The presidential election, however, did not recede for the day. Less than two hours after the ceremony, Obama took his motorcade on an unscheduled trip to the Democratic Party headquarters to hold political meetings. In the evening, he planned to attend a previously arranged fundraiser in Washington.

The transfer of remains came three days after an attack on the consulate, one of a series of assaults on U.S. outposts in Muslim countries that U.S. officials blame on an anti-Muslim video made in the United States.

Clinton said the rage and violence aimed at American missions was prompted by "an awful Internet video that we had nothing to do with."

The president met privately with family members of the fallen before stepping into a cavernous hangar at this base he knows well, home to Air Force One. Emerging from a C-17 cargo plane, six Marines each carried the cases on top of stands before four waiting hearses, as a color guard led the somber procession. When the funeral hymn stopped, a deep silence took over, interrupted only by the quiet steps of the Marines.

Clinton and Obama both spoke of how the four men lived their lives ? and how their mission would go on.

"This work, and the men and women who risk their lives to do it, are at the heart of what makes America great and good," Clinton said. "So we will wipe away our tears, stiffen our spines, and face the future undaunted."

Said Obama: "The United States of America will never retreat from the world. We will never stop working for the dignity and freedom that every person deserves."

Also attending the ceremony were Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.

The searing images of burning flags, breached embassies and smoldering cars have shocked the nation.

The deaths on Tuesday, the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and the anti-American sentiment behind them underscored a foreign policy paradox for Obama. Many of the protests in the Arab world were in countries that underwent Obama-backed revolutions during the Arab Spring.

"The people Egypt, Libya, Yemen and Tunisia did not trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of the mob," Clinton said. "Reasonable people and responsible leaders in these countries need to do everything they can to restore security and hold accountable those behind these violent acts."

Illustrating the volatility, Friday's ceremony unfolded as a Marine rapid response team arrived in Yemen's capital as protests erupted there.

SuperTooth Disco 2

SuperTooth is known for its speakerphone accessories for phones. The company's SuperTooth HD ?earned our Editors' Choice for hands-free Bluetooth speakerphones last year. The Disco 2??is SuperTooth's new portable wireless speaker for music, and at $99 (direct) it's affordable, and sounds pretty good. But in an era when nearly every portable Bluetooth speaker doubles as a speakerphone accessory, the Disco 2 lacks that function. Coming from a company like SuperTooth, that absence is more surprising than the speaker's attractive design and decent sound quality. It just seems like something's missing.

Design
With a distinct slight hourglass profile, the Disco 2 stands 7.2 inches tall, 4.3 inches wide, and 2.8 inches deep. It's available in multiple colors, including black, blue, red, green, and pink, all of which share the same black plastic base and controls surrounded by a colored fabric grille that wraps around the speaker. It weighs a scant 1.2 pounds, making it easy to carry around in a bag despite its slightly larger-than-Jawbone-Jambox size. The top of the speaker holds Power, Volume, and Playback buttons that light up when in use. The base of the speaker has a power port, a 3.5mm audio input, and a charging light.

You can pair the speaker to your smartphone, tablet, or other A2DP-enabled Bluetooth-capable device by holding down the Bluetooth button until the buttons' lights flash. You can pair up to eight devices with the speaker, but like most Bluetooth speakers and headphones you can only use one paired device at a time. If you pair more than eight, the oldest pairing will be deleted from the speaker.

While SuperTooth is best known for its speakerphone accessories, the Disco 2 won't handle your cell phone calls. Most Bluetooth speakers throw this feature in, including the Editors' Choice Logitech UE Mobile Boombox?,?and the Jabra Solemate.

Performance
Music sounds relatively clear, but treble notes sound overly bright and loud songs suffer from slight vibration and distortion that lends a radio-like quality. The guitar notes in Jonathon Coulton's "You Ruined Everything" were slightly muffled, and the singer's voice was slightly bright and buzzy. Our bass test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," suffered from significant distortion, while not feeling particularly powerful. The speaker does fill a small room with sound, however. The Disco 2 is certainly louder and clearer than your smartphone or tablet's speaker, but compared with, say, the Jabra Solemate it doesn't sound particularly good.

According to SuperTooth, the Disco 2 can last up to 10 hours at medium volume or four hours at maximum volume. Curiously, the speaker uses a 12V power cord and not a microUSB cable like most portable Bluetooth speakers. This is slightly inconvenient, because you need to bring that cable and a power outlet to charge the speaker instead of using a USB port or USB adapter like almost every other portable electronic device you have. That's an extra plastic brick to carry with you.

The SuperTooth Disco 2 is eye-catching and inexpensive for a portable Bluetooth speaker, but its oddly phone-free feature set and disappointing sound make it a harder sell than the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, our Editors' Choice, which costs the same $100 as the Disco 2.

Hard coating extends the life of new ultrahigh-density storage device

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? Probe storage devices read and write data by making nanoscale marks on a surface through physical contact. The technology may one day extend the data density limits of conventional magnetic and optical storage, but current probes have limited lifespans due to mechanical wear.

A research team, led by Intel Corp., has now developed a long-lasting ultrahigh-density probe storage device by coating the tips of the probes with a thin metal film.

The team's device features an array of 5,000 ultrasharp probes that is integrated with on-chip electronic circuits. The probes write tiny bits of memory as small as a few nanometers by sending short electrical pulses to a ferroelectric film, a material that can be given a permanent electric polarization by applying an electric field. High-speed data access requires that the probes slide quickly and frequently across the film. To prevent tip wear, which can seriously degrade the write-read resolution of the device, the researchers deposited a thin metal film of hafnium diboride (HfB2) on the probe tips.

As the researchers describe in the American Institute of Physics' journal Applied Physics Letters, the metal film reduces wear and enables the probe tips to retain their write-read resolution at high speeds for distances exceeding 8 kilometers -- greatly increasing the device's lifetime. The data densities of the device exceed 1 Terabit per square inch. The work is an important step toward the commercialization of a probe-based storage technology with capacities that exceed those of hard disk and solid-state drives.

Apparently, This Is Happening: Silicon Valley Bank Hosts An ?American Idol For The Geek Set?

mark wahlberg rock starNot a joke, not an imaginary story: Silicon Valley Bank and Coverflow are hosting an event next month that was described in an invite as "American Idol for the geek set." Now, there's nothing special about getting a bunch of startup assholes to sing karaoke. (Heck, I hear that the TechCrunch team held not one, but two karaoke parties this week.) However, Silicon Valley Voice, which will be held on Oct. 3, looks kinda-sorta legit.

First comprehensive review of European breast cancer screening programs finds benefits outweigh harm

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? A major review of breast cancer screening services in Europe, jointly led by researchers at Queen Mary, University of London, has concluded that the benefits of screening in terms of lives saved outweigh the harms caused by over-diagnosis.

The results, which are published in a special supplement of The Journal of Medical Screening September 13, show that for every 1,000 women screened every two years from the age of 50 to the age of about 68-69, between seven and nine lives would be saved, and four cases would be over-diagnosed.

The European Screening Network (EUROSCREEN) working group, with members from nine European countries where outcome of screening programmes have been assessed, reviewed the estimates of benefit in published European studies in terms of breast cancer deaths prevented, and the major harms, in particular, the rates of what are called "over-diagnosed" cancers. These are breast cancers diagnosed as a result of screening, which would never have given rise to any symptoms during a woman's lifetime and would not have been diagnosed had she not been screened.

A second working group -- European Network for Indicators on Cancer (EUNICE) -- reviewed the organisation, participation rates and main performance parameters of 26 screening programmes in 18 countries, involving 12 million women, between 2001 and 2007. The reports from both working groups have contributed to the review just published.

Stephen Duffy, Professor of Cancer Screening at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine at Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, part of Queen Mary, University of London (UK), who is one of the coordinators of the EUROSCREEN working group and co-author of the supplement, said: "This is the only comprehensive review of the results of breast screening services in Europe. It reports results from screening millions of women, and confirms that the screening services are delivering the benefits expected from the research studies conducted years ago. In particular, it is good news that lives saved by screening outweigh over-diagnosed cases by a factor of two to one."

The researchers also found that for every 1,000 women screened, 170 women would have at least one recall followed by a non-invasive assessment before absence of cancer could be confirmed (a negative result), and 30 women would have at least one recall followed by invasive procedures, such as a biopsy, before confirming a negative result. Screening results that lead to recalls in these circumstances are called "false positives" and can cause women stress and anxiety until the negative result is confirmed.

Dr Eugenio Paci, Director of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute in Florence, Italy, who is a second EUROSCREEN coordinator and co-author, said: "By weighing up the pros and cons of breast cancer screening programmes we hope to ensure that women are fully aware of the chief benefits and harms and can make a fully informed choice when they decide whether or not they wish to attend screening. There has been quite a lot of discussion recently over the worth of breast cancer screening and for this reason it is timely that the international group of experts has assessed the impact of population-based screening in Europe and has found that it is contributing to the reduction in deaths from the disease.

"We believe that not only should our conclusions be communicated to women offered breast screening in Europe, but that, in addition, communication methods should be improved in order to raise women's awareness, and to make information more accessible, relevant and comprehensible."

Breast cancer facts and figures:

  • Worldwide, breast cancer is the most frequent cancer among women and approximately 1.38 million women were diagnosed with this disease in 2008 (the year for which most recent figures are available).
  • In Europe, including non-European Union (EU) countries, 425,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in 2008 and 129,000 European women died of the disease. Data source: Ferlay J et al. GLOBOCAN 2008, Cancer Incidence and Mortality Worldwide. International Agency for Research on Cancer, 2010.
  • In the UK breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with more than 48,400 women diagnosed each year and around 11,550 women dying from the disease. The lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer is one in eight.
  • The UK's NHS breast screening programme detected almost 16,500 cases of breast cancer in 2009/2010. Data source: Cancer Research UK key facts.
  • In Europe, approximately 100,000-140,000 cancers are detected by screening each year among women aged 50-69.
  • The UK is conducting a review of breast cancer screening in order to assess benefits and harms, chaired by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, and to which Prof Duffy submitted evidence earlier this year.

Marijuana use implicated in pregnancy problems

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? New research indicates marijuana-like compounds called endocannabinoids alter genes and biological signals critical to the formation of a normal placenta during pregnancy and may contribute to pregnancy complications like preeclampsia.

A study in the Sept. 14 edition of the Journal of Biological Chemistry offers new evidence that abnormal biological signaling by endocannabinoid lipid molecules produced by the body disrupts the movement of early embryonic cells important to a healthy pregnancy, in particular trophoblast cells that form the placenta. Abnormal placental function is common in preeclampsia -- a medical condition of unknown cause that is a danger to mother and child.

The research -- from scientists in the Division of Reproductive Sciences at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center -- analyzed mouse preimplantation embryos mutated to alter endocannabinoid signaling. They found that either silencing or enhancing endocannabinoid signaling adversely affects trophoblast stem cell migration.

"The findings or our investigation raise concerns that exposure to cannabis products may adversely affect early embryo development that is then perpetuated later in pregnancy," said Sudhansu K. Dey, PhD., principal investigator on the study and division director. "Also, given that endocannabinoid signaling plays a key role in the central nervous system, it would be interesting in future studies to examine whether affected cell migration-related genes in early embryos also participate in neuronal cell migration during brain development."

Along with co-first authors Huirong Xie and Xiaofei Sun, Dey and other members of the research team studied mouse embryos that had not yet implanted inside the uterus of the mother. Previous research by Dey's laboratory has shown the timing of critical events in early pregnancy, including when and how well an embryo implants in the uterus, is vital to a healthy pregnancy and birth.

In the current study, researchers conducted DNA microarray analyses to determine how the expression levels of genes important to healthy embryo development were affected in embryos with abnormal endocannabinoid signaling.

In one group of embryos endocannabinoid signaling was silenced by deleting the gene Cnr1, which activates endocannabinoid signaling processes. A second group of mice was mutated to produce elevated endocannabinoid levels similar to that observed in wild type mice treated with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active psychotropic agent in cannabis. This was done by deleting the gene Faah, which breaks down molecules that activate endocannabinoid signaling.

In both groups, the expression of numerous genes known to be important to cell movement and embryo development was lower than in normal wild type mice. This included the development and migration of trophoblast stem cells. Trophoblast cells help anchor the conceptus with the uterus and also form much of the placenta, critical to establishment of maternal-fetal circulation and exchange of nutrients.

Researchers said mouse models developed for the current study (with silenced and elevated endocannabinoid signaling) may help advance more extensive studies on the causes of preeclampsia.

Lady Gaga and her apparent new hairdo.

By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

Are there free clippers being given out somewhere? It seems like a new celeb reveals a drastic new haircut every day, and tonight is all about Lady Gaga. But this singer didn't do it just for the thrill or to jazz up her usual 'do, she did it for a friend.

Avril Lavigne shaved part of her head, too!

"I did it for u Terry," she tweeted, linking to her blog. "I'm sorry about ure mommy. She has princess die, but were all princess high."

The photo shows the back of (at least what we think is) Gaga's head, with her hair pulled up into a high bun, revealing a triangular section of her hair shaven off.

Have you seen these hair-raising haircuts?

The "Terry" Mama Monster is referring to is famous photographer and friend Terry Richardson, who posted on his Tumblr page today, "R.I.P. Annie Lomax, My Mom 1938-2012"

In 2011, he released a book titled, "Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson," which shows all of his photographs of the singer.

Follow These Guidelines For Home Business Success | Internet ...

Life can strike in unexpected and disruptive ways. Where will you turn if after years of steady employment, you suddenly find yourself without a job? Did you ever envision having a home business? The helpful advice in the article above can be just what you need to finally be your own boss.

When your product is out of stock, be sure to say so. It?s extremely upsetting for customers when they learn that delivery on their order is going to be delayed for an extended time. Suggest your customers purchase a similar product by being honest when items are not currently available.

Make sure to take your family into account when planning a home business. Maybe reconsider your home business strategy, if it cuts into your family time too much.

Be sure to know your competitor?s prices. That will help you stay on top in the market. In this way, you can maintain a competitive edge, as well as keeping a close eye on your own sales figures.

TIP! Keep your business contracts organized so they are easy to find. Also keep your other contracts so that you can deal with companies like your phone service and internet providers.

You need to be patient. Get out of the mindset that you?ll be making huge profits overnight, or you?ll face great disappointment. A home business will take both time and effort and you will see growth as you gain experience. You must learn to remain calm and consistent. They are important virtues to hold onto when maintaining a small business.

Social media is a great way to market a business, but make sure you do not neglect that in favor of socializing. If you get off target, you may waste too much time on socializing instead of focusing on your business. Get on Facebook only after you get off work.

Find out what people are saying about your business, product, and website. In order to get more informed, you can do some independent research on the internet or ask others. Getting input and opinions other than your own is a good way to keep up with how well your business is going and what changes you may need to make.

Using the Internet to promote your business is a great way to make it as profitable as possible. There are several ways you can take advantage of the Internet to promote your business. Write articles that are related to your niche and post them to article directories and blogs. You can also distribute email newsletters to your customers. The result will be increased exposure and increased profits.

TIP! Having a mailing list is a great way to strengthen relationships with your visitors. Furthermore, provide them with an array of chances to become a member of the mailing list by placing it on multiple pages throughout your site.

Design your office so that you are comfortable and your essentials are within easy reach. An uncomfortable chair or an awkward computer angle can lead to pain or even damage. Investing in an ergonomically correct chair for your desk is a real worth-while investment. You should also invest in ergonomic lighting, mouse, mouse pad, keyboard and anything else that you use on a regular basis. Setting yourself a budget of around $200 can go far in helping you set up a comfortable office.

Be sure to create a detailed business plan to guide your home business. Even with a small business, you need to document all of your goals, strategies, and resources. Planning out what you will do will give you the right framework to build your business.

If you ask for outside investment, be prepared to answer lots of questions about how your business operates. Focus on maximizing your profits right now.

A checking account designed for businesses helps you keep track of your business?s financial activity separately from your personal finances. All of your business expenses and income should be through this account. This will help you keep track of how much your business is making. Also get a business credit card for all transactions like ordering supplies.

TIP! If you want to market something and you are not sure what, make it something you use. Figuring out what consumers need is the most important step in choosing a product to sell.

Research anyone you plan to hire for your home business. You need to be certain that all of your employees are skilled and reliable so that they don?t destroy your business.

Take a break during your work day to have a good laugh. Laughing has a lot of benefits, including calming you down, reducing stress, working out the respiratory system and making you feel joyful. Watch videos in YouTube that will motivate you in getting ready to work hard on your home based business.

Take chances if you want your business to stand out and be successful. Trying out new things will bring in new customers and improve profit. By doing things the same way you always have, you?ll always wonder whether or not making a change would have made you more successful.

Financial business planning is an essential part of creating a home business. Write down your projected income for your new business. Break it down into projected revenues and expenses in each main area of your business. You should estimate each aspect of your future financial profile, projecting your sales income, your overhead and expenses, and your profits. This will get you ready for future financial planning and will give you some concept of what to expect with your business.

TIP! Everyone should have business cards. It is easy to find quality business cards online for reasonable prices.

You must make sure that the work area for your home business is properly, safe. This is particularly important if there are children in the home. This may require an investment in certain equipment, but it is necessary for your family. Protecting your family and your business is a key item to focus on. Regardless of whether or not you work out of your house, your business will likely undergo an inspection.

If you?re the only owner of your business on paper, don?t let anyone else make executive financial decisions for the company. Spouses or family members may desire to assist with the business; however, purchases for businesses must be closely monitored to ensure the ability to be used as a tax write off.

While reading this article, hopefully you were inspired to take your life into your own hands. You were given a lot of tips about starting a home business, and now is the time to grab the bull by the horns and go for it! You can keep this article for reference to read anytime you are not sure what the next step you should be taking is

Working solely from the comfort of your own home has its charms, but soon you will miss interacting with people in a face-to-face environment. Try going to different places every week to maintain personal relationships.

TIP! Have a normal schedule. Don?t over-schedule yourself for working though.

Republican plan for Medicare could face years of hurdles: experts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney wants to turn Medicare into a voucher system and President Barack Obama hopes that fact alone will help him win votes among senior citizens and baby boomers.

But health policy experts, including two analysts who first floated the idea of Medicare vouchers 17 years ago, say no such plan is likely to become legislation - let alone law - until after the next presidential election in 2016.

That is because the mere notion of fundamentally revamping the $590 billion-a-year healthcare program, which serves 50 million elderly and disabled Americans, raises a multitude of policy issues that no politician or policymaker has addressed publicly.

Medicare voucher plans call for converting the popular safety-net program from one that offers healthcare benefits to a system that provides a fixed amount of money that beneficiaries can use to purchase coverage from a menu of private insurance plans.

"Could we enact legislation in the next year or so and implement it two or three years from now? My simple answer to that question is 'no,'" said Robert Reischauer, a former director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which reviews legislation with budgetary implications.

That may come as news to voters, particularly in battleground states like Florida, Ohio and Iowa, where the Medicare reform plan adopted by Republicans, including Romney and running mate Paul Ryan, is a main target for Democrats who say it would "end Medicare as we know it."

Reischauer and Henry Aaron of the Brookings Institution proposed a voucher or "premium support" mechanism for Medicare in a 1995 article in the journal Health Affairs widely seen as the first suggestion of such a reform.

On Monday, they spoke at a Washington conference hosted by America's Health Insurance Plans, an industry trade group. The two men agreed that the Republican plan and others like it that have been floated by independent groups in recent years were not "ready for prime time."

"I don't think any of the premium support plans on the table now has gone an inch beyond the specifications that we laid out back then. And I will tell you, we did not design legislation," Aaron said.

No experts in either the public or private sectors of the $2.8 trillion U.S. healthcare system have said in detail how a voucher system might work. The task require better insurance risk-adjustment mechanisms than are available now, as well as a deeper understanding of geographic variations in medical costs.

'A ZILLION ISSUES'

"There are a zillion specific issues. And there's plenty of research, a lot of it unsatisfactory. There's a lot of practical experience, most of it unsatisfactory," said Joseph Antos of the conservative American Enterprise Institute, who appeared with Reischauer and Aaron.

"You can't do this in the next three years," he added. "Maybe in the next five."

Ryan, who chairs the House of Representatives Budget Committee, has proposed a version of a voucher plan that includes traditional Medicare as an option for future retirees and caps annual per- capita Medicare spending at 0.5 percent above the rate of U.S. economic growth.

Romney has proposed a similar plan, which appears on his campaign website. Republicans largely adopted the Ryan plan as part of the party platform at their national convention last month in Tampa, Florida.

Critics say Ryan's main objective is to limit Medicare's ability to widen the federal deficit by shifting costs to seniors and the disabled. He says the plan would strengthen Medicare for generations to come.

Reischauer and Aaron warned it was not clear the strategy would contain costs, saying political pressure could mount on Congress to do away with spending caps, while private insurers could have difficulty fielding plans that cost less than traditional Medicare.

They said the best route could be to combine a voucher mechanism with reforms being implemented under Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known to voters as "Obamacare," which Republicans have vowed to repeal if they win control of the White House and U.S. Senate in the November 6 election.

The law, which comes fully into effect in 2014, is supposed to move Medicare away from its current fee-for-service format that offers healthcare providers incentives to drive costs up. It also calls for state insurance exchanges that would offer consumers federally subsidized private coverage.

Reischauer said the exchanges would provide vital lessons for any future voucher system for Medicare.

Genetic discovery in Montreal for a rare disease in Newfoundland

ScienceDaily (Sep. 6, 2012) ? Researchers from the Guy Rouleau Laboratory affiliated with the CHUM Research Centre and the CHU-Sainte-Justine Research Centre have discovered the genetic cause of a rare disease reported only in patients originating from Newfoundland: hereditary spastic ataxia (HSA).

This condition is characterized by lower-limb spasticity (or stiffness) and ataxia (lack of coordination), the latter leading to speech and swallowing problems, and eye movement abnormalities. The disease is not deadly, but people start developing gait problems between 10 to 20 years of age, walk with a cane in their 30s, and in the most severe cases, are wheel-chair bound in their 50s. It has been shown that HSA is transmitted from the affected parent to the child in a dominant fashion, which means there is a 50% chance of the child having the mutation.

History of a discovery: collaboration between the University of Montreal and Memorial University

Researchers and clinicians from Memorial University (St. John's, Newfoundland) contacted Dr. Rouleau, who is also a professor of medicine at the University of Montreal, over a decade ago to investigate the genetics behind this disorder occurring in three large Newfoundland families. Dr. Inge Meijer, a former doctoral candidate in the Rouleau Laboratory, discovered that these families were ancestrally related, and in 2002, identified the locus (DNA region) containing the mutation causing HSA.

A few years later, Cynthia Bourassa, lead author of the study, took over Meijer's project. "I reexamined some unresolved details using newer and more advanced methods," explains Bourassa, who is a master's student in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal. She then teamed up with Dr. Nancy Merner, who after obtaining her Ph.D. at Memorial University moved to Montreal to further her career in genetic research. "It is an honour to be a part of this study and impact the lives of my fellow Newfoundlanders. I knew coming into the Rouleau Laboratory that the genetic factors of the HAS families had not yet been identified. In fact, I asked about them on my first day of work, shortly after which I teamed up with Cynthia and we found the gene!"

Scientific explanation

The gene harbouring the mutation is VAMP1, encoding the synaptobrevin protein. "Not only was the mutation present in all patients and absent from all population controls, but also, synaptobrevin is a key player in neurotransmitter release, which made sense at the functional level as well," says Bourassa. In fact, the authors believe that this mutation in the VAMP1 gene may affect neurotransmission in areas of the nervous system where the synaptobrevin protein is located, causing the unique symptoms of HSA. In other words, there are not enough messengers released, so nerves cannot function optimally.

"The discovery will benefit the families affected with this extremely debilitating disorder," says Dr. Rouleau. "A genetic diagnostic test can be developed, and genetic counseling can be provided to family members who are at risk of developing the disease or having children with the condition."

Identification of the VAMP1 mutation was made in the Guy Rouleau Laboratory in collaboration with investigators from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. Funding was provided by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Canada Research Chair, and the Jeanne-et-J.-Louis-Levesque Chair for the Genetics of Brain Diseases.

In U.S. politics, where are the interracial couples? | New Orleans ...

(Special from New America Media and The Root) ? Though the latest census data confirms that the number of interracial couples in America has grown significantly in recent years, there is still one place in American society where their numbers remain largely invisible: the campaign trail. Despite our country electing a president who is of mixed race, mixed-race couples remain a rarity in American politics.

The furor that erupted over coverage of Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan?s admission that he once dated a black woman raises an interesting question, with few easy answers. If society is becoming increasingly multiracial, then why don?t those leading society, or running for office to do so, reflect that? Why aren?t there more interracial couples in American politics and government?

According to political consultant Michael Goldman, who has advised the late Ted Kennedy and current Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, the lack of multiracial families in politics is not that surprising. The reason, he explained, is that having a spouse of a different race still represents a political liability. ?To be as ordinary as possible is the goal for a candidate,? Goldman said, adding that most voters feel comfortable voting for someone they can relate to. Since most people still marry people of the same race, for many voters a candidate with a spouse of a different race is simply less relatable. He drew comparisons to the struggle faced by candidates who practice a different religion than the majority of their constituents.

New York public advocate Bill de Blasio has not allowed such concerns to deter him from a career in politics. He is mounting a campaign to become New York City?s mayor. Should the Democrat win, he and his family would make history. De Blasio is white. His wife Chirlane is black. De Blasio admitted, however, in an interview with The Root, that the unique challenges multiracial families, including his own, have faced, can be a deterrent to entering politics. ?If you?re an interracial family you?re still dealing with a certain amount of challenge from society around you just in having that family and in trying to make that family work.? He explained that the glare of the public eye that politics brings could make coping with those challenges even tougher.

Echoing Goldman?s sentiments, he said, ?Society as a whole is not totally acclimated to interracial families yet.? He added, ?We can?t think of another black-white couple active in politics.?

They are out there, but to de Blasio?s larger point they are few and far between. The highest profile mixed-race couples include former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, who is white, and his wife Janet Langhart, a former Ebony Fashion Fair model and news anchor, who is black. They wrote of the challenges they faced early in their relationship in a memoir titled Love in Black and White. The only black justice currently on the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas, is married to Tea Party activist Virginia Thomas, who is white.

It is worth noting, however, that neither of these couples faced the scrutiny of a campaign. Both men are best known for appointed positions, which means they did not have to defend their unions before voters. In Cohen?s case, though, he and his wife married while he was still a Republican member of the U.S. Senate, in the last year of his final term. He has previously acknowledged that the relationship gave some of his supporters pause, meaning their union could have become campaign fodder had he run for re-election.

Studies show that interracial relationships are gaining increasing acceptance with younger generations and that nearly all millennials do not take issue with such unions. Many observers noted that Rep. Paul Ryan is the first member of a major party ticket to disclose an interracial relationship, and at age 42, he also happens to be the first member of a major party ticket who is a member of Generation X. (Some have mentioned in comparison that President Obama had a white girlfriend at one time, but since his mother was also white, it doesn?t make such a disclosure quite as noteworthy.)

Ryan is not alone. Thirty-seven-year-old Republican mayor-turned-GOP congressional candidate Mia Love, who is speaking at this week?s Republican National Convention, is also a member of Generation X and has also dated interracially, and subsequently married. Love is black, while her husband is white.

Basil Smikle, a New York-based political consultant who once worked for Hillary Clinton, speculated that couples like Love?s and de Blasio?s may have an easier time than others, and not just because the public is growing more open-minded. Smikle theorized that black men with white spouses are likely to have the toughest time of all mixed race matches in a campaign. ?I think for an African-American male candidate with a white spouse there is a credibility hurdle that he will need to overcome with black voters that another candidate would not face,? he said.

He explained that while black voters may look at a black woman married to a white man and assume perhaps she simply did not meet the right black man, they see an accomplished black man married to a white woman and assume perhaps he married a trophy wife. This makes visiting black churches and other locales to which black candidates often go a challenge. For instance, as a candidate for the senate in Tennessee, Rep. Harold Ford was the target of an ad featuring a white woman suggestively telling him to ?call me,? which many viewed as a racially coded reference to his interracial relationships. Ford later explored running for the senate in New York, but by that time his white girlfriend had become his wife.

Though New York is not Tennessee, it still would have presented a challenge for him, Smikle explained. ?I don?t think it is something he could not have overcome,? he added. Yet Smikle did conclude that ?If Obama had a white wife it is unlikely he would be president.?

Despite the challenges their unique family may bring in the political sphere, de Blasio and his wife are optimistic about where our country is headed when it comes to race. They recalled that they met weeks after the racially charged Crown Heights riots in New York, and it was love at first sight. Yet after the Spike Lee film Jungle Fever was released that year they were harassed by a group of teens that cornered them while shouting, ?jungle fever.?

Now, two decades later they are preparing to possibly become New York?s first family. ?Today we feel broadly respected and embraced with a few exceptions,? he said. His wife pointed out, though, that there are still times when people see their family together and treat them like they couldn?t possibly be a family, what both of them referred to as ?awkwardness.?

?The day I look forward to is when we are a country without awkwardness, where people just accept people in every configuration,? de Blasio said. ?You would think that by having a biracial president that would be the end of the chapter and we could all go home now, but nothing could be further from the truth. We have a long way to go.?
