Where to Check In After You've Checked Out [Video]

The rising death rate in Japan has lengthened the average wait for cremation to roughly four days. That's a long 96 hours to let you lay there and ripen. So what do you do after shuffling off this mortal coil? You get yourself to a corpse hotel, obviously. More »

Should the U.S. Collaborate With China in Space?

LIFTOFF: China's Shenzhou-8 spacecraft, which has helped pave the way for manned missions this year. Image: Getty Images

The next time humans set foot on the moon, they may well plant a five-starred red flag there. The Chinese space program is developing rapidly, and further progress should come this year when taikonauts, a colloquial term for Chinese astronauts, visit the Tiangong-1 space module.

The president?s chief science adviser John Holdren has said the U.S. would benefit from cooperation with China. The two countries could tackle the problem of space debris and, possibly, lay groundwork for a joint mission to Mars. His thinking fits with the Obama administration?s so-called Asian pivot, a shift in focus from the Middle East to China?s growing influence; the idea is that science and technology cooperation could be a useful lever in negotiations.

But federal legislation now prohibits NASA from pursuing any such joint efforts. The relevant clause first popped up last April in a stopgap funding bill, and in November it reappeared in the legislation funding NASA for 2012. The author of the provision is Representative Frank Wolf of Virginia, who cites China?s human-rights record and the threat of espionage. The ?Wolf clause? has already had a visible effect: journalists from the state-owned Xinhua News Agency were barred from a shuttle launch last year.

One widely held concern is just who would be on the Chinese end of a hypothetical manned mission with the U.S. It is clear that the People?s Liberation Army plays a major role in China?s space missions, says Dean Cheng, a research fellow at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. ?It begs the question of whether there is a civilian manned space program in any meaningful sense of the word,? he says. ?

Many believe that limited collaboration, such as on unmanned missions, would be constructive. ?We found ways to cooperate with the Soviet Union during the cold war,? says Scott Pace, director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University.? ?I don?t see why we couldn?t do similar types of things with China.?

So the White House is pushing back, trading legal memos with congressional investigators on the constitutionality of the Wolf clause, which also binds Holdren?s Office of Science and Technology Policy. Although a court battle seems unlikely, a spokesperson says that Wolf plans to keep a close eye on Holdren and his colleagues in the coming year and ?hold their feet to the fire? to ensure compliance.

Dayton, senator to Vikes: Dome site or nothing (AP)

ST. PAUL, Minn. ? Gov. Mark Dayton and a key state lawmaker say a new Minnesota Vikings stadium must be built at the current site of the Metrodome to secure any kind of state funding this year.

Dayton said Tuesday that two other potential sites are not politically achievable at this time. And Republican state Sen. Julie Rosen says she agrees with Dayton, and she expects to introduce a stadium bill soon with the Metrodome as the chosen site. The bill would include state funding for the multimillion-dollar project.

Spokesmen for the team did not return calls. The Metrodome site had been the team's least favorite of the three options. Dayton says owner Zygi Wilf expressed frustration about the turn of events on Monday.

Dayton says he and lawmakers are meeting team officials Wednesday.

Joe Paterno, revered coach tainted by scandal, dies (Reuters)

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) ? Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football history who was fired in November over a child sexual abuse scandal involving an assistant that rocked America, died on Sunday of lung cancer. He was 85.

Paterno won adoration from fans of the highly successful and profitable Penn State football program and they unleashed invective at the university board of trustees who fired him unceremoniously after 46 years as head coach, tarnishing his outsized legacy.

Equally outraged were his critics and advocates for victims of sexual abuse who faulted Paterno for his relative inaction upon hearing an accusation that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused a young boy in the Penn State football showers in 2002.

Paterno told university officials but not police, opening him to criticism that he protected an accused child molester for nine years.

Sandusky, 67, who has maintained his innocence, faces 52 criminal counts accusing him of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years, using his position as head of a The Second Mile, a charity dedicated to helping troubled children, to find his victims. The court placed him under house arrest.

Waves of mourners descended on a makeshift shrine to Paterno outside the university's Beaver Stadium. They draped an American flag on a statue of Paterno and wrapped its neck with a Penn State scarf.

Sobbing at the statue's feet was Dana Gordon, a 1982 graduate who blamed the school's Board of Trustees for hastening Paterno's death by firing him in a "callous way."

"The way the board treated him took a lot of the fight out of him," Gordon said.

The case raised questions about the measures the university took to protect Sandusky and a football program that Forbes magazine estimated made a profit of $53 million in 2010, especially since accusations against him first surfaced in 1998. At that time a university police detective admonished Sandusky to stop showering naked with boys but stopped short of bringing criminal charges.

One of the biggest scandals in college sports history, it provoked a national discussion about pedophilia in the same way charges involving Roman Catholic priests did years earlier.

The matter also drew impassioned arguments about the balance between protecting the young and the rights of criminal defendants, who are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

"I hope his passing and the controversy surrounding Sandusky will deter other people, especially powerful people, from covering up child sex crimes," said David Clohessy, director of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, a support group.

"Even decades of professional achievement should not obscure dreadfully reckless and callous inaction that results in child sex crimes," Clohessy said.

Sandusky issued a statement sending condolences to the Paterno family that did not mention the investigation.

"Nobody did more for the academic reputation of Penn State than Joe Paterno. He maintained a high standard in a very difficult profession," Sandusky said.

Paterno won a reputation for making sure his players graduated and one of the program's mottos was "Success With Honor."

Paterno's downfall was spectacular. For decades he was a symbol of vitality who patrolled the Penn State sidelines with unchallenged authority, easily recognizable by his thick eyeglasses and jet-black hair that only showed a hint of gray in his later years. His two national championships, in 1982 and 1986, won him enduring loyalty from fans who affectionately called him "JoePa."

In the end, he was confined to a wheelchair upon breaking his hip in a fall one month after being fired, and he wore a wig after losing his hair to chemotherapy, according to the Washington Post, which interviewed Paterno about a week before his death.

Paterno was surrounded by family when he died 9:25 a.m. on Sunday of metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung, Mount Nittany Medical Center said in a statement.

IMPACT ON CRIMINAL CASE

Paterno's death may not significantly affect the case against Sandusky, but was more likely to weaken the criminal case against two university officials charged with perjury, at least one legal expert said.

Paterno learned of at least one accusation against Sandusky in 2002, when graduate assistant Mike McQueary told Paterno he witnessed Sandusky molesting a boy of about 10 years old in the showers of the Lasch Football Building.

Paterno told university officials but not police, a decision that ultimately led to his downfall.

Paterno, in an interview with the Washington Post published on January 14, said he was uncertain how to handle the matter and trusted the university administration.

Paterno testified before the grand jury that he informed former athletic director Tim Curley about what McQueary told him. About 10 days later, McQueary testified, he was called to a meeting with Curley and university finance official Gary Schultz to discuss what happened.

Curley and Schultz both face perjury charges based on their inaction. Schultz also testified before the grand jury he was aware of the 1998 investigation of Sandusky.

University President Graham Spanier was fired along with Paterno, and Curley and Schultz stepped down.

"If he (Paterno) had known the devastation that this means, he would have reacted differently," said Peter Pelullo, founder of Let Go, Let Peace Come In, a support group helping some of Sandusky's accusers with counseling.

"If there had been an auto accident on the Penn State campus and a kid had been run over, everybody would have called 911. That boy was being crushed at the moment he was in the shower with Sandusky. It's not just Joe Paterno but the rest of the country that didn't understand this," Pelullo said.

Because Paterno was not believed to have witnessed any purported abuse, his testimony would not have been crucial to Sandusky trial, said Paul Callan, a former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney.

But his death could set back the criminal case against Curley and Schultz.

"The Confrontation Clause (of the constitution) guarantees that criminal defendants will have the right to confront and cross-examine the witnesses against them at the time of trial," Callan said. "No defense attorneys were present at the grand jury proceedings to do such a cross-examination."

Max Kennerly, a Philadelphia trial lawyer who has followed the case, said Paterno's death was unlikely to alter any civil litigation being contemplated by Sandusky's accusers. If any were considering suing Paterno, they could just name his estate.

"Death doesn't change your status as a party," Kennerly said.

Romney to release taxes, Gingrich ready for Obama (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Stung by a South Carolina setback that capped a bad week, Mitt Romney said he would release his tax returns Tuesday in hopes of ending a campaign distraction while revived rival Newt Gingrich said he was the strongest Republican to go "toe to toe" with President Barack Obama.

Rick Santorum, third in the South Carolina vote, maintained he was the lone "consistent conservative" left in the race and pledged to keep campaigning in Florida, next on the calendar with its Jan. 31 primary, and beyond.

The newly scrambled presidential contest shifted to Florida after Gingrich stopped Romney's sprint to the nomination with a convincing victory in the first-in-the South primary. For now, that removed the air of inevitability that surrounded Romney's candidacy. But Florida is larger, more diverse and more expensive, and brings new challenges for Gingrich. Once again, he must show he can overcome financial and organizational disadvantages, as he did in South Carolina.

"One of the reasons I think people in South Carolina voted for me was a belief that I could debate Obama head to head, that I could convey conservative values," said Gingrich as the candidates made the rounds of the Sunday talk shows.

"I think we had better be prepared for a tough campaign, whoever we nominate," the former House speaker said. He added, "I can go toe to toe with President Obama on big things. ... I think you can draw a very strong case that in the end the dynamics of a Gingrich/Obama fight are much better for Republicans than the dynamics of a Romney/Obama fight."

Romney said it was "not a good week for me" and cited all the time he had spent talking about his tax returns as his rivals pressed him to make them public before his promised date in April.

After months of resistance, Romney had said last week that he would release tax information for 2011, but not until close to the tax filing deadline. That also was seen as a time, before the South Carolina race rattled his front-runner status, when the GOP nomination might have been decided.

"I think we just made a mistake in holding off as long as we did. It just was a distraction. We want to get back to the real issues of the campaign: leadership, character, a vision for America, how to get jobs again in America and how to rein in the excessive scale of the federal government," said Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist.

Romney disclosed last week that, despite his wealth of hundreds of millions of dollars, he has been paying in the neighborhood of 15 percent, far below the top maximum income tax rate of 35 percent, because his income "comes overwhelmingly from investments made in the past."

"Given all the attention that's been focused on tax returns, given the distraction that I think they became in these last couple of weeks," Romney said Sunday he would release his 2010 returns and estimates for his 2011 returns at the same time "so there's not a second release down the road."

"We'll be putting our returns on the Internet, people can look through them," Romney said. "It will provide, I think, plenty of information for people to understand that the sources of my income are exactly as described in the financial disclosure statements we put out a couple of months ago.

During 2010 and the first nine months of 2011, the Romney family had at least $9.6 million in income, according to a financial disclosure form submitted in August.

Further focusing attention on his wealth was Romney's offhand remark to reporters that his income from paid speeches amounted to "not very much" money. In the August disclosure statement, he reported being paid $373,327.62 for such appearances for the 12 months ending last February. That sum alone would him in the top 1 percent of U.S. taxpayers.

In addition, Romney owns investments worth between $7 million and $32 million in offshore-based holdings, which are often used legitimately by private equity firms to attract foreign investors. Such offshore accounts also can enable wealthy investors to defer paying U.S. taxes on some assets, according to tax experts.

"I know people will try and find something," Romney said, adding, "We pay full, fair taxes, and you'll see it's a pretty substantial amount."

Santorum, who beat Romney and Gingrich in leadoff Iowa, scoffed at the suggestion he might leave the race so conservatives could rally behind Gingrich against Romney.

"The idea that conservatives have to coalesce in order to beat Mitt Romney, well, that's just not true anymore. Conservatives actually can have a choice. We don't have to rush to judgment,' he said.

"The longer this campaign goes on," Santorum said, "the better it is for conservatives, the better it is for our party."

Santorum's continued presence ensures at least some division among Florida's tea party activists and evangelicals, a division that could help Romney help erase questions about his candidacy.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul likely will not be a factor in Florida. He already had said he was bypassing the state in favor of smaller subsequent contests.

As the first Southern primary, South Carolina has been a proving ground for Republican presidential hopefuls in recent years. Since Ronald Reagan in 1980, every Republican contender who won the primary has gone on to capture the party's nomination.

Returns from 95 percent of the state's precincts showed Gingrich with 41 percent of the vote to 27 percent for Romney. Santorum was winning 17 percent, Paul 13 percent.

Already, Romney and a group that supports him were on the air in Florida with a significant television ad campaign, more than $7 million combined to date.

Gingrich appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press," CBS' "Face the Nation" and CNN's "State of the Union." Romney was on "Fox News Sunday," while Santorum was on ABC's "This Week" and CNN.

Obama sings soul, briefly (AP)

NEW YORK ? President Barack Obama took a brief and unexpected turn as a soul singer at a New York fundraiser, crooning a bar from an Al Green classic and then joking that he hadn't been ushered offstage.

It happened at Manhattan's Apollo Theater late Thursday, when Obama stepped to the podium and veered from prepared remarks to thank Green for warming up the crowd.

Apparently not content with simply praising him, Obama suddenly launched into Green's "Let's Stay Together," starting with the vibrato "I" and pausing for enthusiastic applause before finishing up with the line "so in love with you."

Obama said his staff didn't believe he'd really do it.

Then he joked that the Sandman hadn't come out ? a reference to Sandman Sims, the tap dancer who chased unpopular acts offstage at the Apollo for decades.

5 things that sunk Rick Perry (Politico)

Rick Perry proved that all streaks ultimately end.

The Texas governor, who entered the 2012 GOP primary as the on-paper front-runner to become the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney, ended his campaign Thursday on a note of grace and pride that belied a debacle of a five-month candidacy. It?s the first election he has lost ? and it wasn?t pretty.

Perry ends his presidential run

Pundits react: Perry drops out

Below, POLITICO?s five reasons why Perry tanked:

1) The fire in the belly wasn?t there at the start

There were many things that ailed Rick Perry. But it is every candidate?s job to get himself elected.

Quite simply, Perry was either not ready, or his heart wasn?t in it ? or both.

Perry began with a head of steam when he declared his candidacy the day of the Ames Straw Poll on Aug. 13, stepping on Michele Bachmann?s win there and sucking the media oxygen out of the room. He was all bravura and tough talk, telling Iowa crowds he wanted to get rough with Ben Bernanke and blowing kisses to Romney for the cameras.

But he had almost no second act after that. The moment he was forced to talk issues he revealed just how ill prepared he was to be a candidate. He had clearly thought little about foreign policy and his answers to questions about the topic had the feel of a student who had crammed for an exam by committing a few lines to memory. He was more at ease discussing domestic affairs but never veered far from the sort of platitudes he?d been reciting for years in Texas.

Perry?s calling card was supposed to be retail politicking, but he was never quite able to connect with Iowa voters. A powerful governor for the past decade who either stiff-armed or simply ran around his state?s press corps, Perry was unaccustomed to the 24-hour news cycle and the relentlessness of the national press corps.

Most importantly, Perry never seemed to have the fire in the belly. His wife, he?d said, told him to ?get out of your comfort zone? and run. In addition to whatever physical issues may have come from experimental back surgery he underwent shortly before kicking off his campaign, Perry ? who had ruled out running for president late last year, only to have his longtime aides tell him that all that really mattered was raising vast sums of money ? often said in speeches that he did not wake up every day with a burning desire to be president.

It showed. Given how hard it is to run, that burning desire is essential for every candidate.

A Semiconductor Stock to Stay Away From This Year (The Motley Fool)

When I wrote about Veeco Instruments (Nasdaq: VECO - News) last year, I had said that terrible times are in the offing for this semiconductor equipment provider. The company's stock has continued its downward journey since then, and to top it all, Veeco has left its investors poorer by some 52% this year as almost all of its businesses took a hammering.

Now let's see how bad the new year may turn out for Veeco and also check if the company has some fuel in its tank to deliver a surprise in 2012.

A year to forget
First, let's do a background check on Veeco. The company has been compounding its revenue at the rate of 20% annually over the last five years. Also, its revenue growth so far this year comes in just above that mark -- at 25% -- when compared with the same period a year ago. However, a number of factors squeezed the company's margins badly and led to a more than one-third drop in earnings this year. Let's see what went wrong.

Veeco manufactures and sells LEDs, solar panels, and hard-disk drives. In 2011, it saw all its product lines take a hit due to global economic uncertainties. Moreover, the management revealed in the third-quarter earnings release that bookings for Veeco's products have halved from 2010, which doesn't bode well for it in the coming year. The company's revenue growth has already slowed this year, and it won't come as a surprise if the top line ceases to grow next year.

Industry blues
Established players in the industry such as Cree and Aixtron have had a bad time this year, and it seems everyone's woes are likely to go into the new year as well. The weakness in the solar industry coupled with uncertainty in the LED market make the coming year look even more tenuous. Throw in the uncertain future of hard drives as the world moves toward the mobile computing platform, and we see Veeco facing some more headwinds.

The Foolish takeaway
With the way the industry is shaping up at the moment and the possibility of an awful year looming large over Veeco's head, it seems the company's woes are set to continue.

DES MOINES, Iowa ? In a surprise flip, Rick Santorum edged front-runner Mitt Romney by 34 votes in the final tally of the Iowa caucuses, Republican officials said Thursday. But no winner was declared because some votes remain uncertified two weeks after the event's closest contest ever.

The state party initially had declared Romney the victor ? by just 8 votes ? in the first voting for the Republican presidential nomination, based on the count the morning after the Jan. 3 caucuses.

Iowa Republican Chairman Matt Strawn announced the new, certified totals Thursday, but said the party would not name an official winner because the results were so close and some votes can't be counted. Results from 8 of the state's 1,774 precincts were not certified to the state party by Wednesday's 5 p.m. deadline.

Of the votes certified, however, Strawn said Santorum was the winner.

Unofficial election night results from the 8 precincts gave Santorum 81 votes and Romney 46. If those results had been certified, Santorum's lead in the final tally would have been 69 votes.

Santorum was quick to claim the Iowa victory, saying in a fundraising email that "the incredible news" makes the score for Romney and himself 1-1. Romney followed Iowa with a strong win in New Hampshire. The third contest, South Carolina's primary, is Saturday.

Romney called the Iowa results a "virtual tie." In a written statement, the former Massachusetts governor praised Santorum's "strong performance" in the state.

The certified results: Santorum with 29,839 votes and Romney at 29,805, a difference of 34. Ron Paul finished third with 26,036. Newt Gingrich finished fourth with 16,163 votes. Turnout for the caucuses was 121,503.

Strawn blamed the lack of certification on various problems, including a county chairman who went on vacation without mailing in the final documentation.

"It isn't an election that is run by state officials and that's one of the strengths of the caucus process," he said.

Four Lee County precincts are among those listed by the party as not turning in certified vote totals. Lee County GOP Chairman Don Lucas said he believes supporters of a candidate ? he's not sure which ? took the certification document to report to the candidate how they did and never brought it back.

One Franklin County precinct also was among the eight that weren't certified.

Rick Grote, a member of the Franklin County GOP central committee, was the site chair for seven precincts that met at a high school in Hampton. He said the chair for the Geneva/Reeve precinct apparently failed to send the form certifying the vote count to the state party.

But Grote said both he and his brother took pictures of the form, but were never contacted by the state party.

"I don't know why somebody didn't call me or talk to me about, `Hey, we're missing this E-form. Got any clues on what's going on?' At that point, I could have said, I took separate photos of it. My brother took separate photos of it. We could sign an affidavit saying we took pictures, these were the numbers," Grote said.

Strawn said the party had no choice but to stick by its system.

"You have to have one form that all county chairs and all precinct chairs knew well in advance that that was the record," he said. "We just can't vouch for someone saying those are the numbers absent proof of that."

Former Iowa Republican Chairman Richard Schwarm said the vote problems won't ultimately make a difference. He noted that actual delegates will be selected later in the spring as Republicans continue their convention process.

"I think people realize it's a tie," Schwarm said. "It's a straw poll that has no impact on how we pick delegates."

The Associated Press projected based on election night results that Romney would end up with 13 delegates and Santorum 12. With the release of the certified tally, the AP is withdrawing one delegate from Romney's projected total and leaving it unallocated.

"Our goal throughout the certification process was to most accurately reflect and report how Iowans voted on the evening of Jan. 3," said Strawn.

The new numbers could give a boost to Santorum and other candidates trying to undermine Romney's dominance over the field as South Carolina voters go to the polls, with the Florida primary next up.

The field narrowed further Thursday when Texas Gov. Rick Perry abandoned his presidential bid and endorsed Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House of Representatives.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, and other Republican candidates are competing to attract voters seeking a more conservative alternative to Romney.

The Des Moines Register first reported the certified caucus totals on Thursday.

Tom & Lorenzo: Downton Abbey Season Two, Episode Two: A World Fueled by Class

As World War I quite literally drives right up to the front door of Downton Abbey, the old ways of the aristocracy come face to face with the 20th Century and class distinctions rear their head once again, affecting everything from administrative duties at the hospital to forbidden love between a chauffeur and a lady. Whether its an attempt to hold on to the status quo in a world determined to shatter it or the last gasp of an aristocracy angrily slapping away the elements seeking to dissolve it, the upper classes got the upper hand this time around, which isn?t exactly surprising.

Seeing their family home turned into a military convalescent hospital would be frustrating and confusing to the Crawleys in any case and to the show?s credit, some time was spent in the early part of the episode depicting this unease. But show creator and head writer Julian Fellowes has a tendency to go out of his way to make the aristocracy look as benevolent as possible, so a foil was needed for the family; someone to whom they could vent their rage over the massive disruption to their lives. Having Lord Grantham yell at a wounded soldier wouldn't make for the best optics, so an uppity middle class woman with an authoritarian streak and no sense of boundaries will do nicely instead. Enter: Isobel Crawley.

It?s kind of a shame, really. Isobel was never shown to be this pushy and obnoxious in the past, but there was a concerted effort in the writing this episode to frame the change at Downton in terms of class (Witness the Dowager Countess? upset over the fact that soldiers will be "mixing ranks" which in her mind will surely lead to "putting everyone on edge") and since Mrs. Crawley is one of the most prominent non-aristocrat characters in the cast who isn?t a servant, she became in this episode the face of the middle and working class-fueled social change that de?ned the 20th Century. And perhaps not coincidental to how the aristocracy actually viewed the burgeoning middle class, she is portrayed as pushy, disrespectful, and lacking any graces, going so far as to order the servants around and suggest that the family dog be restricted. The result is that Lord Grantham now has someone he can righteously voice his anger and frustrations to without looking bad for it.

Lady Rosamund and the Dowager Countess get deeply involved in ?nding a way to break up Matthew?s engagement to Lavinia Swire and this is mostly due to the fact that they feel Mary should be marrying him, but there?s still a bit of class snobbery informing all their actions here. A good illustration of just how deeply their class distinctions run come when Violet all but snorts at the mention of the Painswicks, her daughter?s in-laws, whom she considers no more than a "recently polished diamond," since the family was "entirely the creation of my son-in-law?s father." They may be moneyed, but they?re not old money and that?s enough to fuel Violet?s derision. It?s also enough to get her and her daughter to believe the most scandalous things about Lavinia with little to support it outside of their own prejudices.

Meanwhile, the Czar and his family are living in captivity but Branson can?t even entertain the idea that his ideological heroes in the revolution will be anything but humane and just toward them. "Give them a little credit," he says with annoyance when the idea is voiced that the royal family is in any danger. This is, of course, to be proven tragically wrong, which makes Branson?s working class ideals look naive and destructive even if they?re coming from the best of intentions or born out of understandable discontent. The show tries its best to portray the reasons behind the growing unease outside the aristocracy but doesn?t always follow through and almost always ends on the point that the aristocrats are the truly benevolent and moral ones."We weren?t at our best in Ireland," offers Lady Sybil in a defense of her country?s actions that?s almost hilariously weak, but Branson?s attempt to humiliate an of?cer visiting Downton is a poor response to it. His anger is well-explained, but unfortunately his actions in attempting to vent his rage only left him looking foolish and impotent.

And ?nally, Thomas, the wily former footman at Downton has the audacity to stroll right through the front door, shattering the social restrictions that always prevented him from doing so. Carson, who in many ways can be more bound to tradition and class distinctions that even the Dowager Countess ("It was an honor," he agrees with a huff, when Violet mentions dancing with him at the servants? ball) is practically apoplectic over this blasphemy. Unfortunately for him, and for anyone who?s trying to hold on to the old ways in this rapidly changing world, Thomas? cocky grin in response is not only earned, it?s downright prophetic as to what?s to come.

Mitt Romney Takes Heat For Pink Slip Comment

Multimillionaire Mitt Romney, a wealthy venture capitalist who has refused to release his tax returns while running for president, has a tougher time than some candidates forging a common-man connection with primary voters.

Case in point: This moment in New Hampshire yesterday.

Romney said during a rally, “I know what it’s like to worry whether you’re going to get fired. There were a couple of times I wondered if I was going to get a pink slip.”

Cute pundits and political opponents’ eyes rolling en masse:

A Romney spokeswoman  had no specific dates or jobs to support this claim, but said his “pink slip” fears occurred “while he worked his way up the career ladder.”

University of New Hampshire political science professor Andy Smith said: “He’s trying to identify with regular folks, but he’s seen as somebody who’s wealthy.”

The former Bay State governor, dubbed a “career politician” by his rivals, also sought to play down his long-held presidential ambitions at Exeter High School.

“I never imagined I’d get a chance to run for president,” said Romney.

At the same rally, Romney faced Occupy protesters chanting “Mitt kills jobs.” On the sump with him, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie responded as only he can.

Kathryn Hamm: It All Starts With A Kiss

In some ways, it seems like a really small thing. It was just a kiss. A G-rated kiss. The kind of kiss that most folks wouldn't pay much attention to if they walked past the embrace on a city block.

But this was no ordinary kiss.

For the first time in US military history, a lesbian couple received the chance to share the traditional first kiss upon a Navy ship's return to shore.

After 80 days at sea, Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of Placerville, California disembarked from her ship and planted one on the lips of her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell of Los Angeles.

Wow.

Just about any American can summon the image Alfred Eisenstaedt captured of the sailor kissing the nurse in Times Square to celebrate war's end in 1945. It's iconic, and understanding the prevalence of that image in our collective psyche helps one to understand why the kiss between Gaeta and Snell is no small thing.

Go Navy! Beat homophobia!

President Obama's work to repeal the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) policy, to support the extension of federal benefits to same-sex domestic partners, and his refusal to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has done so much more than his "I'm-evolving-on-same-sex-marriage" position would lead you to believe. His support of same-sex couples through policy has paved the way for this historic kiss. And I expect that more will soon follow.

What was once a simple protest technique used by the queer community -- grab your girl or your guy and offer up a big, collective show of gay kisses in public to make your point -- now stands the chance of being remembered instead as one iconic, heartfelt, and emotional Kiss that now belongs to gay and lesbian couples, too.

I don't know about other wedding planners out there, but I'm ready to learn more about military wedding custom and dress because openly gay military weddings will be the next new niche trend.

I, for one, am thrilled that all couples -- regardless of sexual orientation -- can now enjoy not only the dignity of serving their country so openly, but also the dignity of loving and serving each other -- openly -- until death do them part.

Texas Drought Threatens Endangered Whooping Cranes (ContributorNetwork)

According to the Associated Press, the devastating drought in Texas this past year is threatening the survival of an endangered species. Only about 300 whooping cranes remain in the wild and use Texas as their wintering grounds. But the drought has made food and water scarce and so far scientists have discovered at least one crane that has died, eliciting alarm since it abnormal to see dead birds this early in the season.

The lack of food is even more problematic on the way back to nest in Canada since the cranes do not eat on the journey. With this concern over the survival of this species, here are some facts about the whooping crane, its population decline, and conservation efforts:

* The National Wildlife Federation reported that whooping cranes are approximately 5 feet tall, making them the tallest bird in North America, weigh about 15 pounds and have a 7.5-foot wingspan.

* The bird has an omnivore diet, eating everything from plants to insects to frogs, and lives 22 to 24 years in the wild, according to National Geographic.

* Before coming into contact with humans, the whooping crane population stood between 15,000 and 20,000 but drastically declined to about 1,400 in 1860 and then a historic low of 15 birds in 1941.

* Hunting and egg collection greatly contributed to their decline but today the biggest threat to the remaining population is the loss of wetlands.

* The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service noted that the small population that winters in Texas' Aransas-Wood Buffalo National park is the only self-sustaining wild population.

* As of July 2010, the wild population stood at 383 and the captive population contained 152 birds, spread out over several zoos and research centers.

* The species was listed as endangered in the U.S. in June of 1970 and today only three populations exist, including one in Florida, the only self-sustaining migratory population in Texas, and the small captive-bred population in Wisconsin, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

* Whooping cranes are recognized by the rust-colored patches on their heads and the birds also mate for life, raising their chicks together and sharing nest duties.

* The species is also known for its courtship displays that include loud calling, leaping into the air, and flapping their wings.

* One whooping crane conservation effort, known as Operation Migration, began in 2001 with the goal of raising the birds in refuges and transferring them to the wild and one of their historical migration patterns between Florid and Wisconsin using a human-operated plane, reported Reuters.

* So far the program has established 90 whooping cranes on this eastern route with the cranes slowly starting to reproduce in the wild.

Ford's SYNC Destinations gets updated, now computer optional

Last year, Ford unveiled the SYNC Destinations app, which allowed owners to use their smartphones to preview and sling locations previously entered on syncmyride.com, to equipped vehicles. This year's update simplifies that process, removing that last step, as locations can now be entered and sent to the vehicle entirely on device and sans website. Also new, is the ability to access and report traffic incidents from "every major interstate, highway, arterial and city street in North America" and support for a plethora of new languages like French and German. PR detailing all the new features awaits after the break.
